About Cancún
Why Cancún is considered an investors paradise
Firstly, did you know that Cancún is only 50 years old? When it was first developing in 1970, there were only a few residents living there. The coast was formed only of mangroves, virgin jungle, and unexplored beaches. However, now there are over half a million people who call Cancún home.

It all started as the Mexican government took an interest in developing the country’s tourism sector to boost the economy. To find the perfect place, government officials analyzed statistics from several successful resort locations such as Miami Beach and Acapulco. They compiled information on the number of tourists, number of hotel rooms, average temperatures, average rainfall, and hurricane events and fed them into a computer program. The computer selected several candidates for a new resort town.
Officials then visited each site along Mexico’s approximately 10,000 kilometers (6,000 miles) of coastline to personally inspect the beaches, swimming, and living conditions. That’s how the area that today we know as Cancún got chosen and recognized for its potential. Development of the area began immediately, in January 1970 with the so-called ”Master Plan” which was divided into three phases:
1) build a tourism zone with hotel installations, shopping centers, golf courses, and marinas;
2) build a residential zone for permanent residents. In other words, an integral city, in the northern part of the territorial reserve, with residential and commercial areas, roads, public buildings, schools, hospitals, and markets;
3) build an international airport to one side of the Cancún-Tulum highway (under construction at the time), on the mainland south of the island.
